Head of Programmes

Karen leads the Health Systems team of Wemos which focusses on three sub-themes: human resources for health, health financing, and medicines.

Karen has worked in international development and public health in East Africa, Latin America and Europe for over 20 years, working in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. She started her career as a diplomat for the government of The Netherlands and worked for five years at the Dutch Embassy in Tanzania.  She worked for the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute for eight years to lead a Health Systems Strengthening project in the Tanzanian Ministry of Health. For several years she also worked as a consultant for international NGOs and the private sector in East Africa.

Karen has a M.Sc. in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Amsterdam, and a Post-Graduate diploma in Environmental Assessment from the University of London.

“What makes Wemos unique is that we connect the dots between the messy reality in countries and the ambitious global targets to achieve universal health coverage. Building on my own experience in the public, private and NGO sector, I am proud to manage the program teams to develop solid evidence and convincing arguments that resonate with the right decision-makers. What drives me most is being part of a movement that makes meaningful and lasting change for the millions of people that do not have access to health care and whose right to health is not fulfilled.”
