Koen Scholten

Global health advocate

“Every person, wherever in the world, has the right to have agency over a life with dignity and in which one can develop oneself to the fullest. Good health is a basic precondition for this. In the preventive field, I learned that there are many factors that you cannot influence but that do affect your health. The location of your crib should make no difference in your chances of growing up in good health. Health is therefore not only an individual responsibility, but also a collective responsibility that, as far as I am concerned, transcends national borders. As a global health advocate at Wemos, and with Wemos’ systemic view, I hope to contribute to this so that the location of that crib becomes a little less important.”

As a global health advocate, Koen is part of the Finance for Health team at Wemos. He focuses on health financing-related areas and is involved in advocacy activities on global health within the Dutch Global Health Alliance.

Koen studied Liberal Arts and Sciences at Leiden University College (LUC) with a focus on global public health. He obtained his master’s degree in Health Economics, Policy and Management from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

After completing his master’s degree and returning to the Netherlands, he worked in the health prevention field, focusing on alcohol and drug abuse prevention at the Trimbos Institute. With a broad multidisciplinary view, Koen is committed to realising the right to health and resilient health systems worldwide.
