New coalition agreement: input for a Dutch global health strategy

21/12/2021 - News

The Covid-19 pandemic has strengthened calls for the need for a coherent Dutch Global Health Strategy. Wemos – as one of the founding members of the Dutch Global Health Alliance (DGHA) – is therefore thrilled to see that the Dutch government has included the intention to develop such a Strategy in the new coalition agreement ‘Omzien naar elkaar, vooruitkijken naar de toekomst’. As the Dutch Global Health Alliance, we have a clear position on the topic. Earlier this month, we shared our views in a policy brief that we submitted to the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV).

In December 2020, the Dutch Parliament adopted a motion in which it asked the Advisory Council for International Affairs (AIV) to give advice on such a strategy’s framework. Over the past year, together with our DGHA partners, we have been intensively engaging with the AIV and other stakeholders about concepts, contents and conditions for a Dutch Global Health Strategy. Through in-depth consultations with selected global health experts and intensive co-creation workshops with various civil society organisations, we recently developed a policy brief and submitted this to the AIV.

We are therefore very pleased to see that the Dutch government’s has expressed its intention to develop a Global Health Strategy in the new cabinet period. We will continue our advocacy to ensure that this strategy will not be limited to international cooperation, but involve and engage multiple Ministries for a truly multisectoral, all-of-government, approach to Global Health.
